Macbook Woe(s) or “How to recover accidentally deleted files from your Macbook”

March 24th, 2007 by Brian Wyrick at 12:33 am

So get this…

I think I am pretty intelligent. I have an idiot-proof plan for backing up my important data. The only time the plan fails is when I, well… act like an idiot.

A few weeks ago I found myself in a situation where I needed to record a two hour presentation onto my Macbook. I did it pro… I hooked up a mixer to a Presonus Firepod and hooked that into the firewire port and fired up GarageBand. (Note: Garageband will not record for two hours… I think it has a 90 minute max)

Now, not knowing the final file size, I realized I needed to make some room on my drives. I try to keep my data pretty clean and organized, but lately I have found myself pretty busy, so I had a lot of loose files to move off to another drive, but found my external drive to be pretty full as well. So, I did what I should have known better to do, I deleted my backup… not my partials, but the full backup, thinking to myself “I’ll make another one as soon as I am done”

I am sure you know what happened after that. I never did. My drive was full so I couldn’t make another copy. And, of course, last Thursday I accidnetaly deleted a folder from my desktop called “Projects.” I am also sure you know that a folder called that contains files somewhat more important than a Lowe’s shopping list.

If you ever find yourself in this situation, I recommenend that you stop using the machine, but do not turn it off, and download Boomerang. This softare is comparatively priced with other recovery software, and was able to recover a lot of my raw files. The files where not organized, but I did save me some work.

I also recommend not deleting your Backups.

Needless to say, I made a new one yesterday, and it was good that I did, because today my logic board started smoking, so I promptly shut the machine down and took it to the Apple Store in my city. Now Apple is replacing it. Hooray for Apple’s terrific warranties. I did, however find out that Apple is no longer offering loaners for Pro-Care member s, which really, really sucks. I can’t really see any reason to have a Pro-care account.

So now I am enjoying playing with a Fujitsu Lifebook while I wait. It is honestly really making me look forward to the rumoured “Featherbook.

Factory Girl: Movie Review.

March 10th, 2007 by Brian Wyrick at 1:12 am

Anyone who studied art or graphic design knows of Andy Warhol. Most people know of the Factory, and Brigid Berlin, and Nico, and The Velvet Underground, and probably Edie Sedgewick.

I however have a terrible memory and really only know of Edie Sedgewick by some sort of lost memory, a sort of “I know I should know who she is and already know everything that I am about to see on screen” thought was circling in my head as I took my seat.

I enjoyed the film. I did some reasearch after seeing it, as I didn’t want to skew my opinion by researching fact before I enjoyed the fiction. Like all movies in this sort of genre, there where a lot of liberties taken. I have enjoyed watching wikipedia articles expand with opinions on the film published as vieled references to historical fact and attempts to summarize critical response.

Also interesting is Bob Dylan’s apparent distaste of Hayden Christensen’s composite character, Billy Quinn. Apparently Lou Reed also hates the movie.

Man, I thought it was good, but, I can see their point. It is a fictionalized version of people’s real lives. I have some crazy friends. I have some crazy friends that are artists, musicians, and filmmakers, and lawyers, and baristas, and one that is a miner. Yes, I would be pissed if some young director made a movie about my friends and it wasn’t right. Really upset.

But I would also be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the film. I think Andy Warhol would have enjoyed it as well.

It was quite glamorous.
